What Is MikroTik CHR?
MikroTik is the Latvian company behind RouterOS, the network operating system that powers millions of routers worldwide — from the €50 hAP on a shelf to carrier-grade CCR appliances in ISP racks. Engineers love it for one reason: it puts BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLANs, stateful firewalling and every VPN protocol that matters into one coherent system, at a fraction of what the big enterprise vendors charge for the same acronyms.
CHR — Cloud Hosted Router — is RouterOS packaged as a virtual machine. Same WinBox, same terminal, same scripting and API as the hardware, delivered as an x86_64 image that boots on a KVM hypervisor. Instead of buying a board, you rent compute: your router lives in a datacenter with redundant power and a gigabit uplink, and a CPU core in our EPYC nodes routes and encrypts far faster than the MIPS or ARM chips inside most physical MikroTiks.
That location is the whole point. A router at the office is stuck behind whatever uplink the building has; a CHR on a Hydra VPS sits directly on a datacenter uplink of up to 10 Gbps, with a dedicated IPv4, reachable from everywhere, protected against DDoS, and immune to power cuts, dead PSUs and 'someone unplugged it' incidents. MikroTik CHR VPS FAQ
CHR (Cloud Hosted Router) is the RouterOS edition MikroTik builds specifically for virtual machines. It is the same operating system you know from hAP or CCR devices — same WinBox, WebFig, terminal, firewall, BGP/OSPF, WireGuard and queues — compiled as an x86_64 image that boots inside a KVM virtual server instead of on a physical board.
CHR has its own licensing model, separate from hardware RouterOS levels. The free tier works forever but caps every interface at 1 Mbps. From your MikroTik account you can activate a 60-day full-speed trial; then the perpetual P1 license (one-time ~$45) unlocks 1 Gbps — a perfect match for CHR Lite — while P10 (~$95) unlocks 10 Gbps, the right pick for the Core and Edge tiers. Licenses are bought once from MikroTik and follow the router, not the hosting.
Our servers are true KVM machines, so the official CHR raw-disk image from mikrotik.com boots without tricks: start the VPS in rescue mode (or any Linux), write the image to the virtual disk with dd, and reboot. The whole process takes about five minutes, and our support team is happy to walk you through it if it's your first time.
Yes. RouterOS v7 rewrote the routing stack and handles full BGP feeds well on CHR. For full IPv4 tables from multiple peers we recommend CHR Core (8 GB RAM) or CHR Edge (16 GB); for default routes, tunnels, route reflection in a lab, or OSPF backbones the Lite plan is plenty.
Absolutely. Your CHR gets a dedicated public IPv4 address, so you can reach it over WinBox (port 8291), WebFig in the browser, SSH and the API — exactly as you would manage a MikroTik in your own rack. We recommend restricting management access to a VPN or trusted IPs with the RouterOS firewall, as on any edge device.
Typical deployments are a VPN concentrator (WireGuard, IPsec IKEv2, L2TP, OpenVPN, SSTP), a site-to-site hub interconnecting offices with EoIP/GRE tunnels, a BGP edge router or route reflector with your own ASN, a cloud firewall/NAT gateway in front of other servers, traffic shaping with queues, or a permanent RouterOS lab for MTCNA/MTCRE practice.
